For National Aboriginal History Month fitness enthusiasts gathered to participate in KDT’s Powwow Bootcamp! Kaha:wi Dance Theatre’s (KDT) high-energy Powwow/dance training class a fun boot camp style workout for people interested in maximizing their physical fitness led by Artistic Director Santee Smith and select KDT instructors.

 KDT’s Powwow Boot Camp allows participants to learn or practice skills in Indigenous dance forms of Powwow and Onkwehon:we (Iroquois) social dances. These dances are performed in combination with exciting and challenging cardiovascular/physical conditioning exercises and contemporary dance.

Marcos Martins joins KDT SI as an instructor

KDT will be welcoming back the incredible Marcos Martins to this years Summer Intensive to teach Capoeira.

Marcos classes consists of all 4 elements of Capoeira – martial art, dance, acrobatics and music. Regardless of your fitness level, you will experience a class that is not only fun but challenging. During a workshop, focus is more on the basics kicks, escapes, and acrobatics of Capoeira. The workshop is done to traditional Capoeira music, to encourage movement and rhythm. Get ready for some serious fun!

Rulan Tangen welcomes dancers and movers to join the circle for a rigorous contemporary dance class!

Rulan’s class is rooted in Indigenous imagery, together we will activate the body’s potential for accessing memory, instinct, intuition, imagination, awareness, feeling and relationship with spirit and the world around. Sessions will culminate in phrases drawn from decades of exploration of an evolving language of Indigenous contemporary dance.

Exciting addition to KDT SI Creation Lab – Jorge Luis Morejón

KDT is thrilled to welcome Jorge Luis Morejon as a guest facilitator at this year’s CREATION LAB – “Harvesting” as a part of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre Summer Intensive 2015. A bearer of embodied Taino consciousness, Jorge has experimented with artistic genres as diverse as theatre, opera, dance and performance and carries a wealth of knowledge particularly from Indigenous Caribbean.

This Creation Lab will make the students acquainted with the culture of Indigenous guajiro populations in rural areas and cities.

CREATION LAB – “Harvesting”

Stories From the Body/Stories from the Land – Monique’s class will explore impulse, gesture, sound and movement, as an embodied approach to storytelling. It is participatory and “on your feet” and rooted in ensemble theatre techniques, collective creation and embodied research.
