Living Ritual is an International Indigenous Performing Arts Festival taking place in July 25-27, 2017 in Tkaronto at Harbourfront Centre’s Fleck Dance Theatre, Toronto, ON, Canada on the ancestral territory of the Onkwehon:we, Anishaanbe and Huron-Wendat, produced by Kaha:wi Dance Theatre. We acknowledge the spirits of the ancestors, animals and the land in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty lands and open a space to honour our interconnectivity and interdependence.
Living Ritual hosts 3 day Indigenous platform for artists and delegates from across Turtle Island (Canada, United States), Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Australia, to gather, celebrate and promote global Indigenous performance with a focus on dance and theatre. Privileging Indigenous performance, the festival focuses on works that are contemporary, experimental and crafted from Indigenous methodology and process.
Opening with Onkwehon:we Edge of the Woods Welcome Ceremony daytime programming includes: Provocation Addresses, panel discussions, Embodied Sharing (Master Classes) and Performative Lectures. Evening public performances include artists and companies who offer a distinctive perspective on Indigenous performance including: Spiderwoman Theater (US)/Aanmitaagzi‘s Material Witness, Qaggiavuut Nunavut Performing Arts, new work Kiviuq Returns; [MIS]CONCIEVE by Thomas Kelly (AU); Rosy Simas Dance - We Wait in the Darkness and KDT’s own NeoIndigenA by Artistic Director Santee Smith among others to be announced.
Living Ritual offers a forum to dialogue on decolonial process, global issues in Indigenous performance, professional development, artistic investigations and promotes artistic cross-pollination, inter-cultural collaborations. It questions from what lens are we looking when we research, create, perform and teach about performance.
Living Ritual is all possible due to the sponsorship of the New Chapter Fund by the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario 150, Harbourfront Centre, Canadian Heritage/The Government of Canada, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, and the KM Hunter Foundation.
This is one of the 200 exceptional projects funded through the Canada Council for the Arts’ New Chapter initiative. With this $35M initiative, the Council supports the creation and sharing of the arts in communities across Canada.
